Radical Father’s Day

I was gonna release these over the course of several days, but then I just have too much other material that would have to wait in line so I’m just gonna jam all these cool videos together on this one page. I just want to say a few things before you jump in.

  1. My dad was in a pretty serious auto accident about a month ago. 2 cracked ribs and a cracked pelvis as well as a bit of a head trauma from a car slamming into his driver’s side door. They had to use the Jaws of Life to get him out of his car. So he’s doing really, really well. And it was a wake up call to me that the idea of making videos with my dad needs to happen NOW.
  2. In true observance of Radical Father’s Day, neither one of us combed our hair, shaved or took showers. We were just two dudes enjoying being dudes and talking about the stuff that we ALWAYS talk about off camera in real life.  I wanted to capture that as simply and easily as possible without a bunch of formal stuff that might inhibit the old man.
  3. My dad has done about 50 years of research into the leading edge of health, wellness and nutrition which pairs up nicely with my 30 years of  Modern Jedi Mind Mastery NLP, Hypnosis, EFT, Energy Healing stuff. I have affectionately “certified” him as an “Independent Alternative Health Field Expert.” Lewis M. Shepard, I.A.H.F.E. :o)
  4. You will be hearing from my dad more in the near future.

Your Body Language is Hypnosis

It’s Day 27 of 90 Day Transformation Challenge #5.

This week in the “Beyond Beliefs Course” that I’m building in this 90 Day Challenge, I taught the mastermind class the NLP technique of Anchoring. As part of the course I gave them the assignment to watch this video by Harvard researcher, Amy Cuddy. Ms. Cuddy very clearly demonstrates (and backs it up with solid data) the power of our physiological movements to communicate not only to other people non verbally, but to communicate to ourselves as well.

And if you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time you will not be surprised when I say, Hey! That’s HYPNOSIS!.

Hypnosis is not some weird mumbo jumbo magic show baloney. Hypnosis is how we communicate to ourselves and others. More importantly, hypnosis is communicating with your unconscious mind and with other people’s unconscious minds as well.

Take advertising for example, EVERY advertiser is attempting to motivate you to take some kind of action. Rule #1 of advertising is to focus on your audience’s SELF INTEREST.

They don’t say.  “Hey person watching this, buy Tide so we can make our quarterly earning goals.”

YOU don’t care about THEIR earnings goals. YOU care about YOU. That’s self interest. It’s not a bad thing. Every organism on this planet is programmed from the “factory” to but their own needs first. There are no altruistic squirrels, amoebas or humans.

So when the advertiser is selling you Tide, they HAVE to communicate why it is better for YOU to buy their laundry detergent. “It gets your clothes whiter! It makes your colors brighter! Your family will LOVE you for using Tide“.

Get it? You and I are constantly being bombarded with messages designed to sneak past your conscious mind and fit like a key into the lock of your unconscious fears, desires, motivations, longings etc.

And BTW, fear is way easier to trigger than the other motivating emotions.

“OMG! What if my family doesn’t love me because their clothes aren’t clean?”

So paying attention to what THEY (the advertisers and manipulators in power) are attempting to communicate to us makes a ton of sense to me. Not to follow their suggestions. But to evaluate them and block them if you so choose.

One excellent technique for STOPPING the influence of the mass media is to STOP WATCHING IT!

Another excellent technique for stopping the influence of the mass media and other people is to TAKE CHARGE of your own hypnosis. In other words, TAKE CHARGE OF HOW YOU COMMUNICATE TO YOURSELF. Take charge of what you do allow past your conscious vigilance. For me that means I stop listening to music with dysfunctional and victim mind set lyrics… in other words MOST popular music. LOL.

It’s about visual, auditory and kinesthetic hygiene. Essentially Amy Cuddy is teaching us Physical or kinesthetic hygiene.

One key way to do this is to become aware of your body language and what it communicates to yourself and others.

You mind mastery assignment today (should you choose to accept it) is to watch Amy Cuddy’s TED talk video.

Put a few of her empowering body language ideas into practice. Keep track in your journal of how you feel as you experiment. See if you can notice and document a positive difference in your own life. Then, let me know how it’s going for you…

(BTW what Ms. Cuddy DOESN’T seem to know is that she unconsciously uses a body position as she speaks that we in NLP call “Placater” which is forearms out and hands up. It is NOT a power position… It’s subconsciously communicates, “Please accept me and my ideas…”

DO NOT use “placater!”Turn your hands so that palms are DOWN. and all of a sudden you have a more powerful message being “broadcast”… but she gets the rest of it spot on.)

Extra Credit:

I call Amy Cuddy’s “power position” with your arms up over your head in a “V” position, “The Victory Position” (maybe she calls it that too, I’ll have to re-watch it) and that suggests to me that the “Victory Song” might be a sweet support vehicle to lock in this concept… And please know that this song is designed to be helpfully hypnotic. In fact it was one of the first songs I wrote that fully incorporated NLP and Conversational Hypnosis language patterns… so technically it is “Sound Healing Hypnosis” The key difference is that I’m “selling” you on your own power and magnificence.

Is Clothing Hypnosis?

I recently signed up for a coaching session with Style and Makeover Expert Kimberly Seltzer.

And in the process it caused me to “get” on a deep, visceral level, that the clothing we wear is actually a form of self hypnosis as well as “group” hypnosis.

The clothing we wear and the “look” we generate can affect our own self confidence and literally how we act and “show up” in the world. It is also a very powerful and effective form of communication to the unconscious minds of other people and guides them in the instant evaluation process that we all go through when we first meet each other.

Dress poorly in cheap clothes from Kohls (which is what I did for years), and guess what? People kind of “get” that unconsciously and they take you less seriously.  Dress well in clothes that fit your body properly and communicate what you actually want to communicate to other people, and somehow it’s just easier to get your point across, to influence and teach and in my case, to positively touch the lives of other people in a significant way.

The old saying goes, “The Clothes make the Man”. I’m not so sure about that, however, after working with Kim to choose clothing that more accurately communicates to other people (particularly my audiences) who I already am, I would definitely say that “The Clothes COMMUNICATE the Man (or the woman for that matter).

Since I am a man, and like most straight guys pretty clueless when it comes to style, I want to specifically challenge other men who are working on becoming more “masterful” in their lives, work, and relationships to definitely include this very important piece of the self improvement process.

Super Slow Work Out

27356790_sIn my extensive research to find the most “bang for your exercise buck”.  I’ve discovered two significantly superior ways to exercise that take a LOT less time and faster, better, more long lasting results.

By “results” I mean triggering…

  1. Muscle building
  2. Fat burning that continues AFTER you are done exercising.
  3. Both methods carry much LESS risk of injury.
  4. Both methods take a LOT less TIME out of your busy schedule.

The first one is High Intensity Interval Training or H.I.I.T.

This is typically using a recumbant bicycler or elliptical machine where you do a short warm up, then alternate 90 seconds of easy movements with 30 seconds of full out intensity. Eventually you can work up to 8 intervals. This is a 20 minute workout that should only be done 2-3 times per week because you need recovery time. How cool is that?

No need to FORCE yourself to schlepp off to the gym every single day.

The second way to a much more effective workout is the “Super Slow” or the “Slow Burn” workout where you take away all the momentum usually associated with lifting weights. You use smaller, lighter weights and slow all your movements down so that your muscles have to work much harder. This is my favorite because it is almost impossible to hurt yourself moving so slowly AND you can feel it start to work IMMEDIATELY.

Just do a couple of super slow squats right now… notice how you can immediately feel the “burn”.

If you do a full 30 minute full body super slow work out that’s going to be enough for the week.

Seriously.

You will absolutely need the rest of the week to recover. You can still walk, ride your bike, play tennis or golf, work in the garden, or do whatever physical movement you want during the rest of the week but in this case more super slow is NOT better. 30 minutes once a week. How does that sound?

Personally I’ve modified the super slow method so that every other day I do something like 5-10 minutes of compound movements EXCRUCIATINGLY SLOWLY… doing it every other day gives my body time to recover but it becomes more of a regular part of my day. I also use every opportunity to walk or bike to do my errands. I’ve also gotten rid of my desk chair and use a standing desk… So moving every day is part of the overall plan.

For my slow burn workout, I’ll do a super slow squat with two 10 pound dumbbells in my hands.  As I get to the standing up part of the squat I do hammer bicep curls the then press the dumbbells up directly over my head… I can usually do only 4-8 of these. It is a full body movement that is safe (I have some shoulder issues) and effective as well as time efficient. The time I am moving the weights over my head, my legs are resting. and while I am in the squat part of the movement, my arms are getting a little break. So it actually is a combination of both of these methods.
