How To Get Your Body To Burn Fat

Dr. Joseph Mercola is one of my “go to guys” when it comes to wellness and weight loss.

When I follow his recommendations, I feel great and am steadily getting leaner and stronger… Intermittent Fasting is just one tool that gets great results fast.

My interpretation of Dr. Mercola’s recommendations?

  1. Limit carbohydrates. Obvious and hidden sugars. Grains. And yes even Fruit.
  2. Modest amounts of healthy, clean Protein. A reasonable amount of grass fed, high quality meats. Excessive meat causes problems.
  3. Healthy fats. Avocados. Coconut oil.
  4. Lots of green vegetables.
  5. Intermittent Fasting
  6. Intelligent exercise.
  7. Keeping your mind in the right place.

Stop Counting Calories!

11151719_sSeriously. When has torturing yourself by counting calories ever had a long term sustainable hope of actually transforming your body?

There is no “one thing” that will suddenly, magically transform you into being fit and healthy.

There are, however, several simple and intelligent steps that will create a new “you.” And I cover all of them in my new course, “It’s Not Just About The Food!”

Here’s a quick review of two important ones that you can work on immediately…

Skip Breakfast

Yes I know that is sacrilege.

We’ve been taught from an early age that “Breakfast is the most important meal.” And it actually STILL is the most important meal. Just not until noon.

Ready for another tip?

Here is the simplest thing that you can do immediately to start turning on the fat burning furnace of your body…

Stop eating at 6 or 7 pm at night

Then, gradually move your breakfast time back by an hour each day until you are fasting for up to 16 hours.

That gives your body time to use up your Glycogen stores and begin turning to your fat stores for energy.

That’s it.

Start with one day a week. Then two… and so on until you find what works best for you. The result is that you will effortlessly reduce calories without deprivation. Without weighing your food or having to keep track of “points”.

The Much Maligned Egg

20275542_sI was returning my used egg cartons recently to the Honest Weight Food Co-op here in Albany NY. There were admittedly a huge stack of them because I hadn’t bothered to bring them in for quite a while, one of my friends there, a young woman in her 20’s commented. “Wow that’s a lot of eggs! aren’t you worried about your cholesterol?”

No. I’m not.

Eggs are just about the most perfect food you could ever eat. Who told us otherwise?

Think about it! We have been eating bird eggs for millions of years. But in the last 25-30 years there has been a radical experiment going on with our diets.

Just like the old story of Chicken Little shouting, “The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling” someone shouted into the the mainstream media, “Eggs are bad!” “Fat makes you fat”, “High Cholesterol Causes Heart Attacks!” “Eggs have cholesterol”

So let’s MANUFACTURE an egg substitute.

Let’s Manufacture bacon substitutes

Let’s sell the hell out of it to the gullible American public…

And Viola! An obesity epidemic… Which we can “solve” with drugs and surgery!

So today, I’m going to talk a bit about the egg. And I’m going to urge you to open your mind back up to this super food.

Here’s what Dr. Joseph Mercola has to say about eggs

If you eat them in the healthiest forms (i.e. raw or poached), you can easily eat one dozen eggs per week as a simple and cost-effective way to add valuable nutrition to your diet. Each egg contains about six grams of high-quality protein, and two raw egg yolks have antioxidant properties equivalent to half a serving of cranberries (25 grams), and almost twice as many as an apple.1

Eggs also contain choline, selenium, biotin, B vitamins, phosphorus, and more, making them are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. And, contrary to popular belief, eating eggs may actually help prevent disease, including heart disease. For example, previous studies have found:

  • Consumption of more than six eggs per week does not increase the risk of stroke and ischemic stroke
  • Eating two eggs a day does not adversely affect endothelial function (an aggregate measure of cardiac risk) in healthy adults, supporting the view that dietary cholesterol may be less detrimental to cardiovascular health than previously thought
  • Proteins in cooked eggs are converted by gastrointestinal enzymes, producing peptides that act as ACE inhibitors (common prescription medications for lowering blood pressure)
  • A survey of South Carolina adults found no correlation of blood cholesterol levels with “bad” dietary habits, such as use of red meat, animal fats, fried foods, butter, eggs, whole milk, bacon, sausage, and cheese

One thing I learned this morning from Dr. Mercola’s article is that the less you cook your eggs the better nutritionally they are. The caveat here is that you MUST get eggs that are organic and free range, not to mention FRESH.  Just like all the other factory farmed foods that our industrial agriculture system creates, factory produced eggs are lower in nutritional content and are more likely to be contaminated.

I’ve been eating most of my eggs in omelets. I will from this point forward be either lightly poaching them or adding them to my protein shakes raw.

The other thing that no one mentions: on a lot of “natural” egg cartons is the statement “Vegetarian Fed Hens.” Doesn’t that seem good? But just consider this: Chickens allowed to range freely, “free-range” chickens, eat seeds and BUGS. Bugs are not vegetables. Bugs are the equivalent of meat. Excellent protein and fat sources. So feeding chicken a diet of grains and calling it healthy is just another one of the linguistic tricks that are being used to confuse and mis-educate us.

Time to wake up people! This amazing vehicle you call your body, needs the proper fuel to function optimally. Let’s start by taking charge of what we put in our mouths as well as our minds!

The Truth About Fat

11674989_mThe bottom line is that we have been “sold” and “marketed” an idea that has been blatantly false.

What idea?

That “fat will make you fat and cause you to drop dead from a heart attack.”

This notion has been pounded into our mass cultural awareness to the point where we literally have been hypnotized to take the “low fat” choice.

The skinny about fat

The problem is all these “low fat” choices are processed foods that are high in sugars and other carbs, which cause us to actually store fat, reduce our metabolisms and feel hungry all the time.

Part of the solution I offer in my Course “It’s Not Just About The Food!” is to address the kinds of foods we eat, back to healthy whole foods with healthy fats, proteins and vegetables. As a hypnotherapist, it became clear to me that I was often competing with the mis-informational hypnosis of endless TV ads touting low fat.

One of the motivations behind my weight loss course is to support your Mind to make the changes that your Body needs in order to shed the pounds and inches and increase your health and vitality. The power of the mass media is significant. Many of the clients who come to me worry that somehow hypnosis will enable me to “control” them.

The truth is there is no way I could ever compete with the deluge of hypnosis being spewed out 24-7 by the mainstream media. That is truly hypnosis.

Here’s just a taste of what he has to say on the subject:

For the past half century, cholesterol has been touted as a grave health hazard, and dietary fat and cholesterol have been portrayed as being among the “deadliest” foods you could possibly eat.

This may finally change, as limitations for cholesterol will likely be removed from the 2015 edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It’s about time really, as 60 years’ worth of research has utterly failed to demonstrate a correlation between high cholesterol and heart disease.

Ultimately if you actually want to lose weight instead of being trapped on the diet roller coaster, you owe it to yourself to get the facts and the kind of support that will enable you to shake off the webs of mis-information that is directly aimed at hooking you on their artificial foods. Food that have been engineered in laboratories to be high in “Craveability” and “Snackability”.

Fructose Overload?

The one inaccuracy in this short video is the erroneous reference to “healthy whole grains” which is basically yet another form of sugar.

I have found over the years, that one of the best sources of accurate information about nutrition and health is Dr. Joseph Mercola.

here’s a short quote from an excellent article by him:

Nearly 30 percent of the global population is overweight or obese, and more than one billion people, worldwide, are expected to fall into the obese category by 2030.

Concomitant to rising obesity rates among all age groups, there’s also been a rapid rise in chronic health problems such as type 2 diabetes, liver disease, heart disease, and cancer.

In one recent study,1 which analyzed data from more than five million people, every 11-pound increase in body weight was associated with an in increased risk for 10 types of cancer, including leukemia, uterine, gallbladder, kidney, cervix, and thyroid cancer.

According to a study published in 2013, nearly one in five US deaths is now associated with obesity. That’s nearly three times higher than previous estimates. Obesity is basically a marker for chronic disease.  The underlying problem, linking obesity with all of these health issues, is metabolic dysfunction.

The obvious question then becomes: What is causing this rampant metabolic dysfunction in the first place? Compelling evidence shows that processed fructose is a primary driver for both obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The average American consumes one-third of a pound of sugar per day, half of which is processed fructose, which is the most damaging of all. The majority of all this sugar is hidden in processed foods and beverages, so to address obesity and/or diabetes, ridding your diet of processed fare is key for success.

When I decided to get serious about getting rid of ALL the secret sugars in my diet, I lost 15 pounds in a few short weeks. Please also remember that “healthy whole grains” are actually a significant form of “sugar” they way your body sees it. And remember dried fruit is also a high sugar food. The key when getting off sugar is to make sure you are getting healthy fats. Coconut oil, Coconut milk, olive oil, grass fed organic butter, local raw milk cheeses, macadamia nuts, hemp hearts, chia seeds, to name a few…

Why Eating French Fries Is Hazardous To Your Health

Acclaimed author Michael Pollan shares a few key reasons why eating French Fries is hazardous to your health.

So aside from these facts:

  1. They turn instantly to sugar in your body
  2. They are fried in unhealthy oils
  3. Are heavily salted (so that you get thirsty enough to drink a large soda)

 Pollan points out a few things the general public is blissfully ignorant of:

  1. They support an unsustainable agriculture system that REQUIRES extremely toxic pesticides. In fact they are so toxic that if something happens to the irrigation equipment the farmers have to wait 5 days for it to be safe enough to venture in to fix it.
  2. After harvest the potatoes have to be “outgassed” in order to be supposedly “safe” to eat.
  3. The “engineers” of this food have also made it so addictive with it’s combined, salt, sugar and fat, that you keep coming back for more.
