I get inquiries every day from folks who want to stop smoking with hypnosis.
One of the consistent questions is: “What is your success rate?”
This is one of those really tricky questions to answer because while most people have heard of the effectiveness of hypnosis for smoking cessation, we’ve also heard people say with disappointment, “hypnosis didn’t work for me.”
The question also reveals the underlying belief that I am somehow responsible for whether they quit or not.
What’s going on? Does hypnosis work or not? If it works it seems like it should work for everybody all the time. Right?
Well it actually does work for everyone. Hypnosis works 100% of the time. Always. Every…. Single…. Time….
BUT!!! Who is the hypnotist that is giving the suggestions that are actually being taken in?
The truth about hypnosis is that you are currently hypnotizing yourself to be a smoker. Seriously. You have the world’s most powerful hypnotist living right between your ears. The problem is that you don’t realize that you have this amazing power. My job is to connect you with your own inner hypnotist and help you to give yourself the suggestions that you want to receive and to do it in a way that helps you get results.
I don’t want to over complicate this so let me use an analogy.
Imagine I’m a really, really good basketball coach. I can teach you how to use your body more effectively and efficiently. I can teach you to keep your elbows in when you take a shot. I can help you keep your head in the game. I can help you get back in the game with the right mindset when things don’t exactly go your way. I can help you get the deeper lessons and meanings under the surface so that your success in basketball generalizes out into every area of your life… but…. I can not shoot the ball for you or dribble past the opposing players for you.
That is ultimately your task.
Now. We have a kind of a myth around hypnosis that has been supported by movies and books. That myth is that I have the power to make you do something you don’t want to do. Namely quit smoking. But the truth is, I can not hypnotize you to do something you don’t want to do. If I could, I would go into the prisons and hypnotize all those people to be honest… Then I would go to Washington DC and hypnotize all the politicians to be honest…. Then I’d go to the Middle East and hypnotize all THOSE people to get along….
Get my point? I can’t hypnotize you to rob a bank and bring the money to me (unless of course you really want to :o).
You may think you want to stop smoking. But the $100,000 dollar question is do you really want to stop?
For the people who are really and truly ready to stop, there is nothing that will keep them from stopping. Sometimes my job is simple. You come to me ready to quit and I help you get congruent and I help you to understand how you are neurologically wired and how to fire the right signals so that you are repulsed by cigarettes and you literally close the door in your mind to them. You are done. Forever.
Sometimes my job is more like that of a detective. For example, if there is some resistance to quitting, I can help you explore beneath the surface of your awareness to find that resistance and release it so that you can then close the door to cigarettes. Forever.
In other cases, there is something going on so deep beneath the surface that it’s going to take a lot more than a few one hour sessions to find it, learn what you need to learn, heal it or release it or whatever has to happen first so that you can then, close the door in your mind to cigarettes forever.
But there is no way to tell before we sit down and work together where you are in this. Which of those three situations are you in?
So the old joke speaks truth: “How many hypnotists does it take to change a light bulb? One. Provided the light bulb wants to change and is ready to change.”
- So if you are ready. If you truly want to stop. I can help you to quit smoking.
- If you want to stop but aren’t ready I can help you get ready.
- If you don’t really want to stop but you think you should or you like the idea of quitting if it doesn’t cost too much or require any effort on your part then you might not be ready (which is fine BTW that is not a judgment you are just not ready yet).
The point is, you not being ready does not equal a failure of hypnosis.
So to answer the question: “What is your success rate” I have to say, “My success rate is 100%. 100% of the people who come to me for help to stop smoking, who are congruently ready to stop, do stop.”
