For sometime I’ve been noticing that depression is not the opposite of anxiety.
Ultimately depression is such extreme anxiety that it actually seems like a different beast.
As you know if you’ve been following any of my work, Anxiety is not a disease! Anxiety is imagining what you do not want to have happen and your unconscious mind reacting physically as if the imagined threat is real.
So what is depression?
Depression is not a disease either! It is a symptom. Depression is a symptom of looking out at a future that is so bleak, so hopeless, so filled with pain and futility, that many people find it impossible to feel joy, happiness or hope. For some people it causes them to shuffle through life head bowed, flat, slow and hesitant… for others it causes them to not be able to get out of bed… in others and extreme cases it can stop a person from wanting to continue living.
It is still a symptom of looking at the future in a negative way. The crucial factors here is that if your brain is fogged. If your gut is not functioning correctly, if the foods you’re eating are literally poisoning you or creating overgrowth of Candida, you may not be able to actually choose the thoughts you are thinking.
My grandfather on my father’s side spent his life in and out of mental hospitals. Depressed. He attempted suicide several times.
In the 1970’s my dad had a bit of a health scare. As a result, he began to learn about nutrition and alternative medical practices. He began to discover the connection between nutrition and overall well being. He looked back and realized that his dad probably had some extreme vitamin deficiencies…
In my own case I experienced as much depression as I did anxiety in my teens and early adulthood. I was also addicted to wheat, corn and sugar. I felt like I was waling around the world with heavy chains dragging behind me…
I think part of my own journey of self healing was made possible by removing the foods from my diet that were wreaking havoc with my brain.
Your unconscious mind does not know that the bleak future being projected on the “mental movie screen” of your mind is not reality. But it is a reality that begins to be created by the continuous focus on hopelessness.
Depression is NOT sadness
Sadness is often an appreciation of someone or some experience that has passed. Sadness can lead to depression if it is projected out into the future as if that is all the future will hold.
So like anxiety, depression is an emotion of the future.
The interesting thing is that there seems to be a literal epidemic of depression. And the typical solution to depression from our medical and psychological practices is to prescribe antidepressants like candy.
To be fair, many people report feeling better at first. To be fair, in clinical trials of most of these drugs, Placebos work just as well 80% of the time.
Less well known is the affect of gluten and Grain Inflammation on many people.
If our gut is inflamed, that gets in the way of “feel good” hormones like serotonin.
There have also been studies done that point to Vitamin B deficiencies as causes of depression and emotional disorders.
So ultimately, we have to support our bodies nutritionally and get off of drugs and foods that ultimately make anxiety and depression worse.
Check out this significant interview by Dr. Joseph Mercola with Dr. Hyla Cass a practicing psychiatrist who practices integrative medicine. Make sure you listen to this to the end where Dr. Cass starts talking about anxiety triggering cortisol, which interferes with sleep which then leads to impaired function and poor decision making…

If you are on anti-anxiety meds or anti-depression meds, Do NOT just go off them! You need to reduce them under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner.
