Adapt or Perish!

The old idea that you can succeed by becoming a “specialist” in some narrow field is being challenged by the increasing rate of change in the world today. One Trick Pony thinking will keep you from being able to respond resourcefully to the rapid change in every field of endeavor…

We have to be able to learn and apply what we’ve learned in new ways. Example: There is no longer a demand for wooden wagon wheels. What’s a wooden wagon wheel maker to do? Well, they make great chandeliers! or take the skills required to make wooden wagon wheels and see where else they can be applied.

Modern example: Mom and Pop video stores used to populate every corner. Then Blockbuster and Hollywood Video came in and wiped them out. Then Netflix and online streaming came in and wiped out Blockbuster. Now Netflix is actually creating it’s own original programming…

The message? Adapt or Die! You HAVE to become a modern day Renaissance man or woman.
